Sustainable fashion, is a part a growing design philosophy and trend of sustainability, the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of environmentalism and social responsibility. Other terms used are eco fashion, green fashion, responsible fashion, fashion with a conscience…the list goes on and on. Confused? We were too and tend to use the term ethical. Here at Real Grace, we are especially interested in social responsibility and the impact the manufacturing process has on people.
Every company we work with is checked for their ethical policies. We source fabrics from one awarding winner ethical supplier. This supplier only sells ethical, organic or fair trade fabrics. We source lace locally. T-shirt printing is done in the UK with a specialist printer who uses water based ink.
We specifically use organic cotton because none organic cotton leads to death and illness for the cotton workers. It’s not good for the environment of course either. Organic cotton is kinder on the wearer’s skin too. We’re guessing that our customers prefer not to have traces of chemical fertiliser and pesticide in their clothes!
We use fabrics made with bamboo and at the moment bamboo is not certified as organic but it grows rapidly with little water and no chemical cocktail!
We love and support the fairtrade movement. If we can source good cloth which is certified as Fairtrade, we do. At the heart of our whole philosophy is treating people with respect so even if a cloth isn’t certified as Fairtrade, we have done everything possible to make sure we have lived up to the principles of trading fairly.
Slow fashion is about slowing down the use of raw materials and appreciating good quality. It also celebrates personal style over fast fashion where there’s a crazy rush to reproduce a style which is here today and gone tomorrow. Here at Real Grace, we love slow fashion and this does not have to mean any kind of compromise of beautifully chic clothes.
Put simply, we use as little as possible. We present our clothes, wrapped carefully in tissue paper which can easily be re-used or recycled. We currently don’t add unnecessary swing tickets to our garments. We do use plastic garment mail sacks as they have been reclaimed from another business. As with all of our ethical/sustainable policies we are constantly looking for best practice.
We know that the lack of sizing consistency across different brands drives you crazy. We can’t control the others but we can give clear information about Real Grace sizing and keep it logical and consistent. Size Guide for real grace
